Yes, this is the expected result if you do not patch u-boot. By default u-boot tries to load a ramdisk and boot from that ramdisk. The patch updates the u-boot environment to make the ramdisk optional. You can either manually update the u-boot environment by using the 'set' and 'saveenv' command on the u-boot command line or you can re-build a patched u-boot.
